Product Certification Under ISO/IEC 17065

GFSI is not a certification body that directly issues certificates to businesses. It evaluates food safety certification programs according to defined benchmarking requirements and recognizes eligible programs.

For a business to have GFSI recognition, it must successfully pass an independent third-party audit under a program recognized by GFSI.

GLOBALG.A.P. is a certification system that evaluates safe and responsible production practices in agriculture, aquaculture, and primary production activities.

The following areas are assessed within the certification scope:

  • Product safety
  • Traceability
  • Environmental practices
  • Employee health and welfare
  • Control of records
  • Production processes

Not every standard within the GLOBALG.A.P. system is automatically recognized by GFSI. For example, the crop production and aquaculture scopes of GLOBALG.A.P. IFA v6 GFS are recognized by GFSI.

BRCGS offers product and process certification programs for food production, packaging, storage, distribution, and supply chain activities.

The following areas are assessed under BRCGS Food Safety:

  • Food safety and quality management system
  • HACCP plan
  • Production site and hygiene conditions
  • Product and process controls
  • Food safety culture
  • Food defense and prevention of food fraud

BRCGS Food Safety Issue 9 is a certification program recognized by GFSI.

IFS consists of certification programs that assess food safety, product quality, and process conformity, especially for retailers and branded product manufacturers.

The following areas of the business are audited under IFS Food:

  • Measurement, analysis, and improvement activities

IFS Food Version 8 has GFSI recognition under the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements v2020.

The certification program is determined according to the business’s field of activity, product group, production stage, and customer expectations:

  • Primary agricultural production and farm activities: GLOBALG.A.P.
  • Food production and processing facilities: BRCGS Food Safety veya IFS Food
  • Food packaging production: BRCGS Packaging Materials veya IFS PACsecure
  • Storage and logistics activities: Relevant BRCGS or IFS logistics programs

GFSI recognition should only be assessed according to the recognition status of the relevant program, version, and activity scope.

The certification process generally consists of the following stages:

  1. Determining the business’s product and activity scope
  2. Selecting the appropriate GLOBALG.A.P., BRCGS, or IFS program
  3. Evaluating application information and audit duration
  4. Conducting the on-site audit by a competent auditor
  5. Closing identified nonconformities by the business
  6. Independent review of the audit file
  7. Making the certification decision
  8. Issuing the certificate if found suitable

The certification decision is made by authorized persons independent of the person who conducted the audit.
